Ecological and socio-economic analysis of market-based incentive schemes for voluntary biodiversity enhancing offsets

Market-based systems to promote biodiversity have been in use in Germany for about 20 years. Especially in recent years, platforms for voluntary climate protection measures and early compensation measures that offer biodiversity-promoting alternatives for users have become increasingly established. In addition, market-based platforms for direct biodiversity-enhancing measures such as sponsorships for flower strips and crowdfunding for insect-friendly mowers are becoming increasingly established.

The central objective of the PhD is to evaluate existing schemes against the background of acceptance (specifically by stakeholder group), ecological and economic effectiveness and feasibility of the measures. Data collection consists of research and conservation and socio-economic analysis of existing measures, complemented by own planning and practice partnerships where appropriate. At the same time, species conservation deficits will be analyzed. Stakeholder surveys and the initiation of a participatory planning process of suitable complexes of measures with high synergies between land management and nature conservation will provide indications of the acceptance and feasibility of such measures.
